Cowichan River Fishing for Steelhead and Trout

| February 27, 2013

The Cowichan river is rated the #1 fly fishing river in Canada for a reason. With the amount of Steelhead and Trout in the river it would be very very hard to get skunked. It’s not uncommon for my fly anglers to catch 30+ trout in a day on the wet fly, and when the hatch is occuring in March thru June, we will regularly catch 30+ trout on the dry fly.

The water level has come up a little since last week and this has pushed some fresh fish into the system, the fishing is about the same as it has been all winter gear fisherman on our boats have been averaging 3-7 Steelhead per day where as last year we averaged higher. The difference has been the size of the Steelhead, this year the average size is much larger. We have landed two fish over 20lbs and many over 15lbs, in fact during most of my guide days we have landed a Steelhead over 12lbs.

The weather looks like its going to rain for the next week, this will bring some more fish into the system and may improve the fishing for Steelhead in March. The water level right now has come up but it is still lower than this time last year.

I have guide days available in March for Cowichan River Steelheading or Trout fishing on the fly. Please book early to get any of the remaining dates. Call: 250-218-1087 ~ Ian Barker
