Abu-Garcia’s – Revo Toro Winch

Abu-Garcia’s Revo Toro Winch

Level wind reels (LWR) seem to be the standard reel that are being used on the Vancouver Island rivers for steelhead and salmon. LWR’s are great because they cast easily, they allow for free drifting your gear and they retrieve the line quickly. LWR’s do come with some issues, the problem I have found with some LWR’s is that if you get a lower quality one you start to encounter little problems with the parts, like they break off or bearings wearing out, the handle starts to wobble, you have to constantly adjust the backlash brake, etc.. So, when it comes to level wind reels its always better not to buy a cheap one, there are far to many moving parts in them and cheap ones just don’t last.

Abu-Garcia has a new reel that I have been looking at online for a few weeks, it’s called the Revo Toro Winch. What has caught my eye is that it is a low-profile baitcaster that can hold a huge amount of line (250yards of 14# line). Not only that, but it has a low rate of retrieve where most LWR’s have a higher rate of retrieve. This allows you to reel the fish in with more power per turn of the reel, which gives you greater control of the fish. Plus, its only 10 ounces and because of the low profile it looks to have a great hand position for reeling and thumbing the spool. I have always wanted to use a low profile baitcaster for steelheading because of their lower profile on the rod, but their line capacity was never enough, with most low profile baitcasters having a capacity of only 120yards of 14# line. The Revo Toro Winch looks to have over come that with their 250 yard capacity.

Anyhow, Abu-Garcia is sending out a Revo Toro Winch for testing on the Stamp River. It’ll be tested along side some other gear for the rest of this steelheading season, for comparison, because if this reel is as good as it looks on the internet, it could possibly be a small revolution for island anglers. But we’ll have to wait and see, I’ll let you know! If you see me on the river, come on by and you can test it for yourself.

Tight lines,
Ian B.
