Port Alberni Sockeye Salmon – Fishing Report – June 21, 2010

| June 22, 2010

I headed out today after taking the much needed weekend off from fishing.  This morning the wind was up a little from last week and the sky was overcast.  I noticed that the sporty fleet was pretty heavy around China Creek and Cous Creek, plus I saw a lot of Sockeye jumping in that area. I decided to head all the way down to Nahmint to see what was happening there, but after 20minutes of trolling Nahmint, I headed back up to China Creek. I’m glad I did because it wasn’t 20 minutes later that I had my limit and was pulling up my gear.

I find that the 2.2mph on the GPS is the magic speed for trolling the Socks.  I don’t think that I have had one fish on any other speed.  Both the fish that I caught today were at around 40ft, my first fish was the biggest Sockeye of the year, being roughtly 8/9lbs.

Anyhow, the fishing is Excellent right now and I’m sure it will stay that way until the end of the summer!

*Effective June 18/10 - Fin Fish Closure - Paper Mill Dam downstream to Harbour Quay is closed from 10pm till 5am everyday until Oct 31st.  So you can’t fish before 5am at the Paper Mill Dam for Sockeye or troll the mouth of the river before 5am.

Tight lines,
Ian B.
