Wigglewood Lures… Black Creek Fly and Tackle.
- My good fishing buddy makes these Wigglewood lures by hand in Black Creek, and we have fished them in the ocean and in the river, I have to say that they work, and they are not made of plastic. In Port Hardy we hooked up on quite a few Salmon with this lure. Here is some more info taken from Wigglewood lures:

Whether you are new to fishing, or a veteran of many angling campaigns you should check out Wigglewood lures by Black Creek Fly and Tackle. These lures having been gaining ground in angling circles in the last three years and it is no wonder. Being a hand-made, local product not only do they look good, they are also very effective at catching fish.
The Wigglewood line of lures was begun by Rick Janzen in 2007. Rick grew up fishing in B.C. and was fishing before he even went to school. Rick’s father and grandfather, both being avid anglers introduced him to the sport in the early 1960s. By the time he was 15 Rick had begun to fly fish for salmon and trout all over the province. While fly fishing is still one of his passions, Rick eventually married and had a family. It was while taking his pre-school aged children fishing that Rick rediscovered the fun of fishing with hardware. “Parents need to take kids fishing if fishing is going to continue to be a relevant pastime that educates and advocates for the great outdoors.” , says Rick. And while kids are young there is no easier way to get them catching fish than with a simple boat and some plugs to drag around. In the early ‘80s Rick was really keen on flatfish type lures for catching feisty Kamloops trout. However, on the advice of a friend Rick began to make wooden plugs that eliminated the drawbacks of the plastic versions. He immediately began to have success and without the headaches of the mass produced plugs.
Wigglewood lures were first made by Rick in the early ‘80s but it took until 2007 before these lures could be made commercially for the fishing public. One of the great features of them is that the fishing line is not connected directly to the plug. Instead, the line is threaded through the plug and tied directly to the hook. This results in some advantages. The first being that the lure has a distinct wiggle action, much like the illusion of the ‘rubber pencil’ trick. The second advantage being that if your hooks snags and you break off, this lure floats to the surface. On still waters you have a really good chance at recovering your gear. Finally, you can easily change hooks because they are not attached to the lure. So if you wish to put on a new, sharper hook, no problem. Or, if you prefer single hooks, that is also easily accommodated. Since beginning sales in 2007 these lures have caught fish all over the globe. They are effective for brook trout, cutthroat, rainbows, kokanee, small mouth bass, Chinook, Coho and have even caught sea trout in the icy Balkan countries.
The Wigglewood line of lures is available in three sizes and over 20 colours. There are two freshwater, sizes. The standard size is 1.5 inches long and comes with a number 12 hook. The magnum size is 2 inches long and comes with a number 10 hook. These ‘trout’ lures come in 18 carefully selected colour combinations. The salmon plugs are 5 inches long and come pre-rigged with a 00 VMC hook. Salmon plugs are available in 14 colours. Currently Wigglewood lures are available in several retail outlets in B.C. Tyee Marine in Campbell River, Gone Fishin’ in Courtenay, Otter Sports in Union Bay and Galilee Fly and Tackle in Langley are local vendors who carry these plugs. They can also be purchase directly online from http://www.blackcreekflyandtackle.com/.
